Data analytics is changing the world. Whether it is the field of business or of sport, the possibilities that are now being realized were unthinkable just a few years ago. We are entering the age of data and, so far, it seems like an age of limitless potential.

Make sure the interest will be longstanding for you and the market.

If you have been rock-climbing for a month now and absolutely love it, the next step is to invest in a rock-climbing franchise, right? Well, not necessarily. If your long term plan is to hold onto your franchise forever, then the interest in rock-climbing might not still be there when you are not as limber as you are now. Or, perhaps, those risk seem far greater now you are sitting in the owners chair.

Follow your interests, but make sure they are founded and not going to just be a fad for the market. If you can’t judge subjectively, assess your competitors and find out how long they have been in operation and determine what their hurdle points are.

What sort of customers do you want to see every day.

Who are your people and who do you identify with? Is it sports-junkies, lovers of chocolate or perhaps it’s a community of dog owners? Your strengths shine through best when you are comfortable, and you are most comfortable in an accepting and energising environment if you are in the early stage of your franchise decision-making process, speak to this future customer base about what brands inspire them, and who they believe best champion their passion.

If all roads are leading to the same brand then you can bank on the quality of customer you will service and you have already forged your way into their community.

It can be hard enough to identify your strengths, let alone apply them to an industry that is worthy of you! Take into consideration what makes you happy, where you experience and qualifications lie, your interest and who also shares that interest with you. Research is everything so research the market and find out where your strengths would thrive.

[Interview] Michelle Tran, Founder Of Fleurite

There’s something about the concepts of “etiquette” and “manners” that conjure images of elegant ladies of yesteryear with upswept hairdos and wearing dresses with mutton-legged sleeves graciously holding tea cups with their little finger extended.

But Michelle Tran argues that etiquette, and business etiquette in particular, has never been more relevant than it is today. It’s not just a matter of knowing the appropriateness of bowing or shaking hands or air-kissing cheeks when in lands and situations that might be new to you. It’s about knowing enough of the “niceties” to be comfortable in any situation and also come off as a polished professional.

Michelle Tran is the founder of Fleurite, a Toronto-based etiquette consultancy firm that equips individuals and small groups with the full range of behaviors, knowledge protocols they need to succeed in business – and life. She launched the business after intensive formal training and certification by a leading program, based in London, for international business etiquette and business protocols.

Michelle Tran helps people learn more than just which forks and spoons to use at state dinners. She helps students understand the cultural nuances that influence business etiquette at home and in different countries. She coaches them in effective networking strategies and communication styles for any occasion. She also offers guidance on style and wardrobe choices – knowing when trendy’s okay but classic will rule, along with the statements that color choices make.

It’s especially important for Millennials in business to get up to speed on these matters, particularly those who intend to make their mark as entrepreneurs, Tran says. She notes that this generation takes a lot of bashing, much of it along stereotypical lines, for its shortcomings in the “real” world.

While she tends to shy away from such characterizations, she still suggests: “The iconoclastic leanings of many Millennials may not help them build the kind of personal brand that goes hand-in-hand with business success without some sort of grounding in business etiquette. And that is really all about showing respect for others in your actions and dealings. This generation is certainly smart enough that Millenials who haven’t yet caught on to its importance soon enough will.”

Michelle Tran recently joined Young Upstarts for a conversation about Millennials and business etiquette, and her observations about its relevance to the entrepreneurs in this generation.

What would you consider the major challenges that this group faces in terms of business manners?

Michelle Tran: Well, probably the biggest one would be their reliance on technology. In fact, that’s wonderful in many respects because Millennials are leading the way on certain trends that are transforming how we work. Teleworking and remote communications are giving us entirely new levels of flexibility and ways to connect.

But, I find it alarming when I walk through the streets of downtown Toronto amidst crowds of people who only look down at the device in their hands and not at each other or the world around them. Good business manners require a level of empathy and the personal touch that face-to-face dealings encourage. It’s especially important for entrepreneurs who have so many stakeholders to sway. It’s hard to sell an investor if you haven’t established a more personal connection than text communications.

We do hear from many in the workplace that communications etiquette tends to escape this generation. How would you characterize this problem?

Michelle Tran: Well, as fun as it might be to pepper your texts with emoticons and use abbreviations like “k” for okay and “ur” for your, there’s a certain form that’s missing in this and Millennials need to recognize the effect it has on the recipient. Most businesses these days use emails for internal and external communications, and those are a lot more formal than texts. While a “k” format for their friends, using text-style writing in emails can come across as way too casual, if not discourteous or condescending. Thinking about the recipient’s communications norms before hitting the send button helps immensely.

What about the respect factor? You hear a lot about Millennials being more casual in their styles, and that trickles down to their direct interactions – which many, say the Baby Boomers, may consider disrespectful. What’s the etiquette here?

Michelle Tran: Well, this is as much about the Golden Rule as it is about good manners. What I love about this generation is its openness to others and tendency to want to treat everyone equally. In dealing with supervisors, this doesn’t mean the Millennial should be humble, mind you, but it does mean you don’t snap your chewing gum (or even have it in your mouth!) when talking with the CEO or tell inappropriate jokes. It’s the reciprocity thing, though, that’s so entwined with good manners, and that’s key for the Millennial entrepreneur to keep in mind. I don’t know that I’d recommend they follow the Steve Jobs style of management – combative, often rude and condescending. That certainly worked for him over the long term, but also got him fired, as well.

How will Millennial entrepreneurs benefit by putting a sharper focus on business etiquette?

Michelle Tran: I think the biggest benefit would be the way it equips people to deal with any situation and people of different generations and cultures with poise and style. There’s a lifetime worth of benefit right there.

Ask any person with a major in communications and they’ll proudly tell you that everything is communication. It might be more than just their bias speaking. Learning more about how to communicate effectively would help most people in their everyday lives. But for entrepreneurs, communication skills are business-critical.

When you’re looking for funding, negotiating with suppliers, or trying to be a leader people can look up to, communication skills will play a major role in your success. If you don’t have the right skills, you’ll have a tough time selling yourself as a serious and talented entrepreneur. It will not matter if you really are. You’ll also have a tough time running a business and setting up a workplace culture that fosters good communication if you can’t communicate well.

Here are four key communication skills you should focus on, for starters:

Conciseness and Clarity.

CEOs, entrepreneurs, and other successful people are a wellspring of useful ideas and practices. Take Infor’s CEO, Charles Phillips, for example. He puts a lot of stock in communication. His company uses instant messaging so that everyone can be in touch. But in this Charles Phillips’ interview, we also learn that he likes to have 5-minute face-to-face meetings.

If you want to be able to convey messages quickly and efficiently, you don’t necessarily need to learn to talk quickly. But you do need to learn how to get to the point quickly. The fewer words you use to express the idea and the sharper you make your language, the better. Learning to express yourself clearly will also help your conciseness. It will also make it less likely that people will misunderstand what you’re trying to say.

Listening.

And speaking of having 5-minute meetings — you won’t be able to pull those off if you don’t know how to listen. Some people don’t differentiate the ability to hear from listening. These are two different things. Hearing is a passive ability. Listening shouldn’t be passive. It should be active.

The deal with passive listening is that you have to maintain complete concentration on what is being said. You want to be sure that you fully understand everything This is something that should be reflected in your answers. Active listening also involves being able to remember the conversation after it’s finished.

Active listening has several benefits besides the obvious ones. Active listeners are often perceived as being more empathetic and interested in what people have to say, for example. That will help you foster a healthier communication culture in your business, and it will make you a better leader.

Written Communication.

Every day in 2017, there were around 269 billion of emails sent around the world. By 2021, it’s expected that the number will be close to 320 billion. While you won’t be in charge of writing all of them, you’ll surely do your part in helping the number of emails grow year after year.

Knowing how to be concise and express yourself clearly will be very helpful when writing emails. It might be even more helpful with instant messaging, another very popular form of written communication. But it might not suffice. Writing emails has its own set of best practices you need to know. You should also master other forms of writing you are likely to use. Getting familiar with the inverted pyramid can be very helpful, as well. You don’t need to learn every form of writing used in business, however. Some tasks, like writing white papers, are always best left to professional writers.

Body Language Understanding and Control.

You probably heard the rule that body language accounts for 93% of all interpersonal communication. The commonly quoted statistic isn’t actually a rule, and it’s not even quoted correctly. It comes from two studies that found that 93% of communication is non-verbal, and that body language amounts to 55% of all communication.

Nevertheless, body language is extremely important in everyday communication, and it’s one of the most important skills you can have as an entrepreneur. People will judge you before you utter a single word based on your appearance, posture, and hundreds of other signals that are processed unconsciously. You need to learn to recognize these signals. Then, you need to learn to control those that can be consciously controlled. Your goal is to learn to radiate confidence.

As an entrepreneur, you’ll have to meet a lot of people on your way to launching a new business. Not all of those meetings will be pleasant, and some will end unfavorably for you. However, learning to communicate well will give you a better chance of getting what you want out of every situation. And when your business idea lifts off, your communication skills will help it stay in flight longer.

Holistic Well-Being Is Integral To Leadership Success

When we think about the qualities of an ideal leader, words like “decisive,” “charismatic,” “visionary”, and “resilient” may come to mind.

Yet we don’t always consider how to maintain qualities like these. Often, the word ‘leadership’ is correlated simply with holding a position of power. By focusing on words and labels alone, the deeper responsibility of being a leader—in fact the very essence of the word ‘leader’ itself — becomes distorted.

In a more apt definition, leaders performing at an optimal level are awake, aware, and inspiring. They are resilient, have control of their mind and senses and can see life at a deeper level — thus inspiring their teams to strive for and reach their highest possible level of work.  They also do their personal best to serve as positive examples — including by taking care of their physical health, cultivating mental strength and resilience, and operating with principle and purpose.

It is particularly important for leaders to maintain their holistic health because a team is neither inspired nor motivated by leaders who are depleted, depressed, or disconnected. Neither are they motivated by leaders who are anxious and uncontrolled. Self-awareness and self-care are mandatory prerequisites to performance and success.

And still we are depleted, depressed and disconnected as a society. The average human attention span dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8.25 sec in 2015, putting us now below the 9 second attention span of a goldfish. The average office worker checks their email 30 times an hour. Media overload is the sixth top cause of stress in the U.S. including all forms of Media ranging from television to social media.

Breaking from that cycle, I created a yoga-inspired approach that includes a more comprehensive examination of how we can become the best leaders possible. The dimensions this approach considers includes:

  • Physical: diet, exercise, yoga asana, sleep
  • Energy: conscious breathing, communication
  • Mind: self-observation, self-awareness, perspective
  • Knowledge: space, meditation
  • Bliss: Principle-led living, finding your purpose, and doing things that bring you joy

By considering the health of each of our dimensions we can move beyond our disconnected tendencies, cultivating qualities essential to leadership success.

Because the truth is, our personal wellbeing is directly connected to leadership success. To function fully as a leader, we need to be happy, healthy, and connected to ourselves and our lives so we can engage, motivate, and even inspire our teams. We do this by taking care of ourselves. If leaders are not fully functioning, they can’t be there fully for their teams or their families.

My yoga teacher Rolf Gates once said to us quite early in our year-long teacher training, “We do yoga for ourselves and others.” He said it a lot. I didn’t get it at first.

Now it has become the mantra that has guided the last five years of my research. I’ll state it a little differently:

We take care of our holistic health for ourselves and others.

Inspiring leaders have great habits of health and wellbeing. They invest in their success by investing in themselves. When you truly begin to realize how much you can positively enhance the lives of others through your own good example, being your best self offers life meaning and purpose.

4 Ways Leaders Can Help Their Company’s Culture Thrive

Some employees just aren’t into their jobs.

In fact, that may be true for most of them. The Gallup organization, which regularly measures employee engagement across the country, reports that just 32 percent of employees say they are enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. With the right approach, business leaders can improve their corporate culture and motivate employees to perform at their highest capacity.

Successful leaders are the ones who intentionally use their behavior as a positive example. If you expect employees to work overtime for important deadlines, for example, they are much more inclined to do their best if you also stay and work the overtime.

To really get those employees engaged, a leader also must commit to supporting the growth of people and not just systems, products or processes.

Here are four ways leaders can do that:

1. Insist on a healthy work/life balance.

Work and home used to have clearer boundaries, but these days work is always a mouse click or text message away. That can make it tough for both employees and corporate leaders to balance their lives, but it’s important that they do.

When your life is well balanced, you will be more satisfied, more motivated, happier and healthier. To achieve that balance, you need to learn to say “no”; to set boundaries, such as declining to take work calls after 9 p.m.; and to handle issues as they come up so that you aren’t thinking about them after you go home. Leaders should practice this themselves and then help their companies facilitate it for employees.

2. Practice effective communication.

Communication isn’t just about what you say, it’s how well you listen. You want to be an active listener. That means you not only hear the words the other person is saying, but you try to understand the complete message that’s being sent. To achieve that, you should practice empathy, focus your attention, show you are listening through both verbal and non-verbal responses, suspend judgment, ask questions and verify that you correctly understand the other person’s message.

3. Focus on your people.

If employees are happy, customers will have a better experience. Three key factors to achieving that, she says, are hiring the right people, providing a robust and generous benefits package, and prioritizing wellness efforts that encourage employees to exercise and eat right.

4. Regularly conduct employee surveys.

It’s important to ask employees about what’s working and what’s not working. But remember that surveys that only gather information are not useful. To make them effective, your organization must also provide detailed results back to your team and create an implementation plan that includes some of your employees’ ideas.

Although every person is different, we universally do well with leaders who focus on appreciation, respect and trust, and who empower teams to add value to the company. Exceptional leaders know how to motivate employees, retain quality talent and cultivate job satisfaction.

As entrepreneurs and professionals, it is our job to notice behavioral shifts and assess how they’ll impact our businesses and our future.

I’ve been fascinated by the shifting consumer behavior in retail. Consumers are voting with their wallets for brands that facilitate personal choice and maker connections. Digital platforms and social networks have changed the relationship between brands and consumer. Consumers have an expectation to be treated as individuals, no matter how large the brand their dealing with. Just think, companies used to publish PO Box addresses as the medium to receive customer feedback. Now, a customer can tweet at the brand and if there’s not a near immediate response the relationship is at risk.

Social networks helped change the consumer expectation that large brands would communicate with them as individuals. This expectation and preference for personalized treatment has moved from a communication preference in to the product realm.

Tesla took market share by allowing consumers to customize a car and have it delivered. Progressive created tools to customize insurance coverage. The norm isn’t to just “see what’s on” when it’s TV time, it’s an active choice: perusing the DVR options or going directly to Prime Video, Netflix or Hulu to actively decide what to watch.

The broadcast approach no longer works.

In 2018, there will be more online shopping than ever before. The availability of products and information online, and this vast increase in choices has given consumers leverage over the big corporations. Retail stores have embraced this hyper customization too. From choosing your sleep number to making your own froyo dessert, hyper customization is here to stay and will change the way everyone shops. Even industries you may never think to conform to this are jumping on board, like buying furniture. This trend has already affected the economy and in turn will change how businesses market to their customers.

Adapting to this choice revolution is important because consumers are looking for more than just the transaction. As you rise out of bed every day, the sun also rises, and when the earth turns on its axis to give sunlight to the other side of the globe, you also retire from the day’s work and go to bed.

Your very biorhythms jive and sync at the whim of the sun, and the clouds beneath it transmit to you, in subconscious signals, the scope and purpose of your days.

How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.

So, it’s only fitting that we learn broader metaphorical lessons from the sun that we can weave into our daily routines to live more empowered lives.

Yes, we may be a solar company, but we believe not just in solar powered homes, but also in living a better life. Buying solar arrays is just a part of what we believe to be that better life.

If we can learn to be as steady and giving as the sun, we will have lived lives not just worth remembering, but lives worth living, too.

2. Rise Above It All.

The sun makes up 98 percent of the mass in our solar system, so it’s only fitting that we study the way it conducts itself, especially as it pertains to how the sun always seems to rise above it all in a manner more consistent than any other example in nature can provide us.

Burning hydrogen and helium in a blaze of glory, the sun is undaunted by anything that stands in its way, and is governed by a set of physical laws that ensures we benefit from it every day, even if we do not necessarily see it.

How much could you accomplish if you rose above every obstacle in your path to achieve your goals? The sun can’t be distracted. It follows its order and provides to those who need it without folder.

If you can be as consistent as the sun in fulfilling your obligations, you will likely become the most effective person you know.

On one quick note for the astronomy buffs out there, yes, we know the sun technically doesn’t “rise.” The Earth merely spins, but it appears to us as if the sun does rise.

And in the event our universe was designed, perhaps the way the sun appears to us serves as a teleological indicator of how we should govern ourselves in our daily routines.

More simply put, if the display of how the sun and earth interoperate in the heavens doesn’t give us a visual depiction of how we should live our lives, the way we experience the sun from Earth surely does.

Are you as dependable to others as the sun is to you?

Sometimes it’s hard to be dependable for other people when we feel like our heads are already under water.

However, T.S. Eliot said it best when he pointed out that we’ll never know how tall we are if our heads are never under water.

And learning how to be dependable for others is a great starting point for opening ourselves up to the discomfort needed to grow into dependable people.

The sun provides the photosynthesis that plants (and therefore vegetables and fruit, which we depend on for great health), need to grow into consumable energy. It gives us warmth, and it gives us efficient ways to power our homes with solar panels.

The sun is also so dependable that we can count on it to power our homes, and for lower long-term costs than utility companies can ever provide on their own.

If you can be as dependable for others as the sun is for you, you will be a person everyone wants to keep in their lives.

3. Do What’s Expected of You, and Without Thanks.

Sometimes something can be so dependable that we take it for granted. Much in the same manner, when we count on others to do things for us, it becomes easy to forget to thank them because their greatness demonstrates no deviation from the norm.

And once we become used to the norm, we oft forget to remember the significance of others’ actions.

However, doing great things shouldn’t be about recognition—it should be about the utility we provide for other people, and the sun serves as an exemplary case of this truism.

4. Rise Early and Surely.

Sometimes we have days where we just want to stay in bed. Our lives feel as overcast and dreary as ever, and we know there’s a job waiting for us to be completed, somewhere, somehow.

That’s when the temptation to stay in bed and blow off the entire day comes in to play.

Could you imagine what would happen if the sun decided, as if it had any volition of its own, to take a day off?

If the sun disappeared for a day, we would float out of its orbit, and be without its warmth and rays of light for eternity. One day without it means eons without it. The seas would freeze over, the All earth-dwelling lifeforms would be die, and the

5. If You’re Out of Sight, Make Sure People Know You’re Still There for Them.

Although the sun sometimes goes out of sight, we can still count on it for us to be there in the morning when we wake up.

This life lesson is geared especially toward the millennial generation reading this post. Before you hate on this life lesson too much, know that a millennial is writing this post (I was born in 1990).

Yes, you’re a special snowflake, but knowing your place in the order of the universe and, more specifically, the world, can help you understand that you are part of a system much greater than yourself.

The sooner you can find a way to start contributing to this larger-than-self system, the better off you’ll be in the long run.

Although you may be everything to someone, you’re not everything to everyone.

Just as you may be everything to your wife or your husband, your girlfriend or your boyfriend, your brother or your sister, you are not everything to everyone else in the universe. But you can and should be something to someone.

8. Don’t Put Shade on the Accomplishments of Others.

Does the sun discriminate against others when selecting to whom it should give its light?

No. It may provide light to us at a different time each day depending on where we’re located, but it shares and distributes its light in a remarkably even and fair fashion.

The sun gives us the light we need to see the miracles of others’ work, not just to see the miracles we may work ourselves.

When someone else does something significant, it’s worth giving them the light he or she deserves. No matter what the circumstances surrounding his or her track record. Light heals, and we should allow others to receive it whenever possible.

Although many cultures around the world champion individual accomplishment and dominance above all else, ask yourself where you’d be today if nobody gave you an opportunity to shine on the stage of your life.

Would you be singing the same tune or dancing the same dance?

9. Know When to Put the Heat on Others, and How to Receive It Gracefully.

There will be seemingly innumerable times in our lives where we’ll have to play the scalding hot sun, and the person we’re upset with will have to play yard worker without sunscreen. These roles will also be reversed throughout the course of a lifetime, no matter who you are.

There are specific ways each of these solar scenarios should be handled.

Sunlight is a gift, but sometimes it also gets a little too hot for comfort. When we’re on the receiving end of the heat, we should remember why we’re thankful for it to get through the myriad discomforts we feel while laboring beneath it. After all, without the sunlight, we wouldn’t be able to grow and progress as individuals.

Laboring in the sun for a few hours can build integrity. The more discomfort we can endure, the stronger we’ll become and the more we’ll grow.

When it comes to putting the heat on others, we need to remember to assert ourselves without coming off as too pushy.

Whether at work, home, or school, very few of us enjoys physical confrontation. However, sometimes it’s necessary to be assertive and galvanize others into action when we need to see results.

Just as the sun has a way of laying the heat on us while we’re laboring, we need to develop our own way of laying the heat on others in a way that permits their growth, understanding, and development.

After all, if we never ask for something that we want from somebody, the odds of getting what we want are drastically reduced.

Gender Pay Gap Among Freelancers And Self-Employed Now Virtually Non-Existent

New data compiled by an online services marketplace shows that the gender pay gap among freelancers and the self-employed is now virtually non-existent. Based on internal data and information gathered from the websites local service professionals, Bidvine.com found that women quoting for jobs in sectors such as personal training, tutors and plumbers earned the same rate as their male counterparts, with women earning more in some instances.

Bidvine.com looked at internal data from the last 12 months, as well as surveying 150 men and 150 women who are signed up as local service providers and found that there had been a significant reduction in the ‘gender wage gap’ in their top 5 key industries.

The average rate for men and women are shown below:

  1. Personal trainer – M: £36 / F: £33 (per hour)
  2. Wedding photographer – M: £650 / F: £680 (per wedding)
  3. Handy person – M: £20 / F: £17 (per hour)
  4. Domestic cleaner – M: £11 / F: £12 (per hour)
  5. Plumber – M: £73 / F: £70 (per hour)
  6. Music tutor – M: £28 / F: £28 (per hour)
  7. Gardener – M: £21 / F: £19 (per hour)
  8. Language tutor – M: £25 / F: £28 (per hour)
  9. Electrician – M: £70 / F: £68 (per hour)
  10. Singing tutor M: £30 / F: £35 (per hour)

Although the data found that there had been a significant decrease in the ‘gender wage gap’ for the services offered by Bidvine, 2017 figures from the Office for National Statistics show an average gap of 14.1% across all age groups and sectors, a figure which has stayed unchanged since 2014.

Russ Morgan, co-founder of Bidvine.com commented on the findings, saying:

“It’s great to see that, at least among the skilled professionals on our site, the gender pay gap is virtually extinct. The explosion of freelance and self-employed workers has seen a shift in how people value the work they do, and what their customers see as value for money for a job well-done.

“Of course, more could always be done, but it’s encouraging to see that when people have autonomy over their pricing, men and women both value their time and skills at the same financial level and customers don’t appear to take gender into consideration when finding the right person for their job.

“We’re looking forward to the next 12 months, and hopefully a significant change to the ONS figures this time next year.”
