4 Questions To Ask Before You Hire An App Developer

by Guy Cooper, Managing Director of Wave Digital

The startup industry is littered with stories of founders being taken for a ride by their app developer. So if you want an app that not only works at the end but will be a hit with your users, what should you do? The key to choosing an app developer is research.

Here are four critical questions to ask both yourself and an app developer before making the decision to engage them to design and deliver your app.

1. What is your experience in the app development industry?

One of the most significant factors for choosing an app development company is their experience. You may want to put your trust in a new company that has a well reputed entrepreneur at the helm, so weigh up experience across three areas:

  • The company
  • The founder, Managing Director or CEO
  • The apps they have built

First, look at the app development company’s website including their about section. Ideally, a reputable app developer will clearly identify the company’s history such as when it was founded, its strategic direction and who is leading it. You can also verify this information on LinkedIn.

Research the founder, MD or CEO of the company. Do they have a presence in their local tech industry? This is also where your own priorities may influence who you are looking to partner with. Different leaders will approach projects from different perspectives, for example, consider whether they have a strong commercial, creative or technical background.

Finally, review the apps they have built. These should be highlighted in their folio but you can also ask to see their apps, particularly those that are internal to business and may not be publicly available. Are they simply template apps or do they involve integrations and more complex business rules. You may be interested in their experience building solutions for trusted brands and other startups, or apps with similar functionality to your idea.

2. What is your reputation as an app developer?

Fortunately, there are now a wealth of customer review sites for services based businesses, many of which are verified.

In the app development industry, a relatively new but important player is Clutch. A B2B research, ratings and reviews platform located in Washington, DC, they provide in-depth client reviews, data-driven content and vetted market leaders. They also provide leaders tables for app development companies around the world.

Also consider Google reviews – are they all in one period or spread over time? Well reputed companies should also have client testimonials included on their website. Look at whether testimonials are provided for most projects as well as the seniority of those giving them.

3. Do you have experience with my preferred platform?

While platform choice should occur after establishing a thorough understanding of the problem, audience and goals, it is something you can talk about upfront with a potential supplier.

It is important to understand that while there are technologies that allow developers to write code once and deploy it to both iOS and Android platforms, writing native code can be a preferable option. Do their developers have this capability and does this extend across both platforms? Equally, an app developer that specialises for example in iPhone apps may not grasp the different design patterns for Android or properly leverage that device’s operating system.

Does the app development company talk about web apps? It may be that you don’t need an iPhone or Android app. Instead the needs of your users and your business could be met via an app that is accessed using the phone’s internet browser.

3. How much will it cost and when is the earliest you can deliver?

In the app development industry, you do get what you pay for. There are resources available on app cost in different countries, for example this resource on how much it costs to build an app in Australia, and an app developer should be upfront about what can be achieved within a specific budget.

Rather than select a developer that creates your app in your budget by cutting corners – whether that’s using less experienced developers, offshoring, writing poorer quality code or creating a less well-thought out user experience – ask about other options. Can the company get you to a point where you have the collateral to attract more investment? Are they interested in a partnership? Can you stage development?

Also beware of app developers that agree to timelines you know yourself are tight. Ask for detail on how they plan to achieve them. If an app developer doesn’t push back, you may find yourself signed up to a project that surprisingly (or not!) encounters delays.

Guy Cooper is Managing Director of Wave Digital, an Australian app development company founded in 2000. He is a business owner and tech entrepreneur who works with founders, executives and fellow business owners to bring their app ideas to life.

A Guide To Monetizing A Mobile Game App

Designing mobile video games has become a big business for developers. Mobile games are incredibly popular and relatively speaking, they can be easy to design and distribute. Designing and distributing a game doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful in terms of profitability, though.

There are different ways to monetize a game, ranging from in-game payments to games that charge by the download. The following provides what you need to know about monetizing a mobile game app, and the different ways you can do it.

If you’re developing a game, monetization needs to be a priority you keep in mind from the very beginning. The logistics of your game and its design are going to factor heavily into the type of monetization style that’s going to work best.

Microtransactions.

While microtransactions aren’t always the easiest option to incorporate in a mobile game, it does tend to work well, which is one reason it’s worth mentioning first.

With microtransactions, players can purchase additional virtual items. This might mean certain tools, currency, or cosmetic skins, as examples.

There are different objectives a game player might have when it comes to in-game purchases. Some might want to boost their game performance, and others are just for cosmetics.

Microtransactions work well as a monetization approach because they’re very tempting to dedicated game players. It can allow them to progress more effectively and efficiently and if a player doesn’t make the purchase it can feel like they aren’t getting the most out of the game experience.

Advertising.

Advertising is simple and straightforward—you allow advertisers to use space on your game, and you earn revenue as a result. Most games with advertising are free.

There are different ways advertisements become part of a game. Display ads are the most common, and display ads might mean banners, videos or dynamic displays, as well as static ads.

Interstitial ads are shown at automatic intervals. These ads are a natural fit with games that have level-based progression because there is a break between levels and gameplay and the ad can fit in there.

Incentivized ads offer an in-game incentive to a player who interacts with an ad.  An example of this would be a gameplayer earning in-game currency if they watch a video ad.

Contextual ads are integrated as part of a game. They can blend in with the scenery of the game itself.

The Freemium Model.

The freemium model allows your users to download and ultimately check out your game app for free. Then, if they like it, they pay for access to premium features.

This is fairly frequently used. Game developers might do a free lite version of their app for example. Then, if you want to advance in the different levels of gameplay, you would pay.

The challenge here is making sure that your premium, paid content is interesting enough and unique enough that people are going to want to pay for it.

What About Paid Apps?

Sometimes game developers will think it’ll be simpler to just do a paid app where the user pays when they download the game, and they can leave it at that.

Paid apps are good for revenue in the short-term, but there are some issues with this option.

First, it’s going to be tough to get someone to pay for an app right off the bat that they know nothing about, especially when there are so many free options. With in-app monetization, you’ve already gotten people hooked on your game before you ask them to pay anything.

Additionally, monetizing a game within the interface can be better to make ongoing, long-term revenue rather than one-time revenue from the download itself.

If you do research, you’ll find there are very few – as in under a handful – of paid apps that are in the top 200 rankings on the app store.

If you develop a game, your original strategy for monetizing it might not end up being what you stick with. You may look at your analytics and study user behavior and find out that you need to shift your strategy.

You want to drill down into the details when you’re using analytics to gain a better understanding of your customers. You should be looking at how each level of the game is being received by users, and work on identifying ways you can improve their experience.

If you can keep improving the user experience, there will be more opportunities for you to identify ongoing monetization options.

Four Things You Can Expect From A Cloud Fax System

When it comes to making sure that a business is running as expected, there are understandably quite a few things to look into and consider. Arguably, the most important area of business consider at is efficiency. The more efficient a business is, in terms of everything from communication to simple, menial tasks, the more work that can get done in a day. When more work can get done within a day’s time, the more profit a business can make, and many business owners see this as the best end result.

In order to achieve that end result, one area which businesses are going to want to emphasize is communication between businesses. While there are certainly quite a few ways for businesses to communicate with each other, one of the most effective ways for businesses to do this is via a cloud fax system. These systems are considerably different than their analogue counterparts. With a reliable fax system installed, a business can easily get in touch with other businesses, making life as a business owner much easier.

Here are some of the things to be expected when a business makes the shift from its previous form of communication to cloud faxing.

1. Traditional Fax Machines Aren’t Needed.

While the term “fax” is in the name, businesses shouldn’t get the wrong idea. Rather than making use of the near-obsolete fax machine from decades ago, this form of faxing simply requires one business to have a device that can connect to the internet, and for the receiving end to have the same. The businesses don’t even have to have the same type of device. It just has to be something that can handle an internet connection and benefit from that connection. In a way, this makes cloud faxing a process that takes all of the effort out of traditional faxing.

2. It Is More Secure Than Other Forms of Communication.

One concern that many businesses may have with cloud fax is the idea of security. Thankfully, businesses can expect a cloud faxing system to be far more secure than any form of email. For one, the data becomes encrypted when you work with a cloud faxing program. This means that somehow, if someone were to possibly intercept the fax, they wouldn’t be able to understand the document anyway. If a business needs to send out time- or content-sensitive materials, cloud faxing may be the best way to go about doing it.

3. It Is Cheaper in the Long Run.

Businesses can also expect to spend considerably less on cloud faxing compared to traditional faxing. Most traditional fax machines need ink, rolls and rolls of paper, as well as the manpower of someone standing beside the machine to ensure that everything falls into place. All of this costs time and resources that no business wants to have eaten away. On the other hand, cloud faxing only requires a device with an internet connection, which is quite a bit easier to manage, especially in today’s world.

4. It Is Easier for the Other End.

Especially when one business wants to make a good impression on another, requiring someone to stand on the other end of a traditional fax machine is something that never really makes a business look good. If a business is handling sensitive documents, but doesn’t want to make a big deal out of them, cloud faxing might be the best way to go about this. The only thing required is a device with an internet connection, which is something that everyone should have in today’s age. This makes it considerably easier for the other end to receive the message, which is incredibly important.

6 Strategies For Attracting Customers From Day One

One of the biggest challenges that startups face is attracting customers early on. Brand awareness and reputation are crucial to success, but these are both developed over time which means that it is difficult to succeed early on – this is particularly true when you are operating in a competitive industry with household name brands. So, what can be done about this?

There are a few strategies to try which will hopefully help you to find success straight out of the gate and it will then become much easier to attract even more customers as your reputation and brand awareness improves.

1. Start Advertising Early.

Advertising early is important because it will help to create awareness and excitement about your brand. This means that people will know about your company and what you can provide from the moment that you launch so you do not have to wait for the word to get out.

2. Digital Marketing.

Digital marketing is critical to success for any startup, as this is how you make people aware of your brand and start competing from day one. You should be using a variety of digital marketing techniques, including:

  • SEO
  • PPC
  • Content marketing
  • Influencer marketing
  • Email marketing
  • Video marketing

3. Be Eco-Friendly.

Modern consumers are becoming increasingly eco-conscious and will often seek out brands that are environmentally-friendly. There are many ways to be eco-friendly, including using a recycling baler to manage your recycling – these machines from places like recyclingbalers.com can make it quick and easy to increase and manage your recycling, which is crucial for reducing environmental impact.

4. Deals & Promotions.

Every consumer will keep a lookout for a good deal or promotion. This can be a smart way for a startup to lure customers away from the bigger brands, and you should then be able to retain these customers if you can provide a high-quality product/service and excellent customer service.

5. Form A Strategic Alliance.

If you are able to identify a business that is not a direct competitor but has the same target customer as you then it is a smart idea to approach them to form a strategic alliance. This allows you to immediately reach their already established customer base and could help you to attract customers to your business from day one.

6. Host An Event.

Hosting an event like a launch party can also be a way to raise awareness about your brand right from the start. Additionally, being a company that is social and brings people together can help you to develop a positive reputation, which will be so important for both attracting and retaining customers.

This post should give you a few ideas for ways in which you can attract customers to your business from the very start. This is one of the biggest challenges that startups face and is a key contributor to why many startups flop before they have had a chance to succeed. It is challenging, but if you can attract customers straight out of the gate, it can become much easier to attract more customers in time.

Curation Through Connection: Why Marketers Should Look Beyond Just Data

by Eric Nalbone, Head of Marketing for Drum

Imagine being transported back to the 60s and having to explain to a stereotypical ad agency executive (like you, I’m imagining Jon Hamm’s character from Mad Men) where the battle for eyeballs would be fought and won today. The contrast between the tools in Don Draper’s arsenal and the data-laden, digital-focused tools marketers have available today highlights the profound impact that time and technology have had on our industry.

Today’s era is defined by highly targeted, personalized advertising based on characteristics that brands and businesses can identify about you, me or anyone else on the internet. The initial delight around a curated advertising experience has been met with recent blowback around data privacy, with Facebook and Wells Fargo serving as two prominent examples. Moreover, this personalized experience may not be as tailored as advertisers make it out to be… ever notice how your Facebook and Instagram ads focus nearly exclusively on recent search history or the stereotypical set of products that “people like you” might want?

If consumers are going to reject this brand of ‘personalization,’ companies need to now find less intrusive, more authentic ways to connect with customers. StichFix’s “personalized stylist” or Spotify’s annual year-in-review ‘Wrapped’ podcasts stand as particularly memorable examples of this done well.

Don’t get me wrong – both traditional media and digital advertising channels are still important tools in building brand awareness, but they no longer provide the validation of high quality or resonance with consumers. Once upon a time an ad placement in Vogue was an implicit endorsement from the publication, although these days the buying of media has been democratized and made widely accessible – that validation is no longer implied.

While personalization appears to be the dominant trend enabled by the digital age, there’s a second axis to modern marketing that gets plenty of press, but isn’t as well-understood as we’d hope – the availability and use of data in modern marketers’ worlds.

We now have access to more data than ever, but what hasn’t changed is how we teach people to use data – in an increasingly messy world, an understanding of the math & statistics to actually use it well is more important than ever, but it’s not a skill set that is often taught to marketers. Complex modeling to truly unpack that problem is a discipline unto itself, and realistically – it’s too complex for most non-enterprise businesses to invest time, money and energy into.

What’s the solution? Follow your customer – listen to them. Give them ways to tell you what motivated their behavior, whether that’s in your selection of advertising channels, surveying them when they’re standing at your cash register, or sending surveys after the fact. Chances are, your customers will tell you a different story than the sum of your advertising dashboards – and that’s a problem we as marketers must deal with.

We built Drum around the idea that the way consumers are now validating products and experiences is more reliant on human connection and social endorsement. Influencer marketing is a valuable, recent construct that plays on this idea, although it is limited to those who have established spheres of influence that are large enough to be valuable to brands. Moreover, what brands are purchasing from influencers is still, effectively, digital media rather than conversions.

We think the missing piece to this ecosystem is a digital sales platform, where any person is able to serve as a salesperson (we call them Drummers) for brands of their choosing, and businesses of any size have access to high quality sales talent. By leveraging Drummer networks to populate the platform with vetted, high-quality businesses, we can solve the authenticity gap for consumers, and by offering true “pay as you go” model that provides a conversion guarantee for businesses.

As I think about building my organization and function in 2020, I’m anchoring on three key themes (in rank order) that I think are essential to differentiate a brand in today’s day and age. These aren’t new, but their ordering certainly runs counter to the CPA, CPL, data-driven & obsessively analytical Performance Marketing culture that the digital age has fostered:

Authenticity – We, like all businesses, need scalable ways to build personal connections with customers by tapping into situational relevance, not just demographic relevance

Quality – Findings ways to unleash the best of what customers know about the quality of your product is likely more powerful than anything your business can say directly

Performance – As the digital arms race continues, we will need to find more creative ways to leverage dollars in driving conversions, not just purchasing expensive media

Whether the dominant forces in the marketing ecosystem look more like Don Draper in the ‘60s or Mark Zuckerberg in the 2000s, we still have the same underlying challenge: How do we communicate the value of what we offer to the right people at the right time? Consumers are more aware than ever about how technology is making that possible for companies, and it’s shaping how they respond.

Eric Nalbone is the Head of Marketing for Drum. He has previously led Marketing for Bellhops, a tech-enabled moving company headquartered in Chattanooga, TN, and held a variety of roles with Kabbage, eBay, and General Electric. Eric resides in Atlanta, GA.

How Can SMEs Build An Affordable Cloud?

Are you a startup or a small to a medium-sized company looking to build affordable cloud infrastructure? Then you are at the right place to receive the best and affordable ideas. Before even selecting on the server to build your private cloud, you first need to focus on some crucial points that directly affect your business.

  • Are you a single tenant or you would want others to be using the server space?
  • The speed and agility you want?
  • Do you have the IT budget to set up the private cloud?

When it comes to building private cloud, the professional vendors, analysts, and practitioners focus on four basic tenets that should be in operation so that the IT department should take full advantage of the private cloud setup:

  • Converged Infrastructure
  • Fully automated orchestration of both Software distribution and system management
  • Self-Service Catalog that includes standard computing offerings
  • Standard accountability to keep track of used resources.

We will discuss the above points later, let’s first know some basic know-how of “CLOUD”.

What is the Cloud?

Cloud is not a single physical server or a structure. It is a global network of the remote servers that have different configurations and are made to operate as a single ecosystem. The virtual servers are made up of cores of the physical server’s operating system.

In these servers, you can run any applications, store and manage data, deliver services such as streaming videos, office productivity software, webmail or access social media. The data here is highly secured. Instead of accessing data from a local or personal computer, you are accessing it online. And the information you save on cloud can be accessed from almost everywhere, anytime you need and from any device.

There are three types of Cloud.

  • Public Cloud – In which server space and all the resources are shared and it offers services to the public all over the internet.
  • Private Cloud – In which the server space is utilized by the private internal network or within the company.
  • Hybrid Cloud – In this type, services are shared between public and private clouds.Benefits of Cloud to the Medium Scale Industries.

The main benefits a medium scale business can achieve by running their system in a private cloud environment are

  • Flexibility
  • Quick data access
  • Data localization
  • Guaranteed resource availability
  • Strong Security
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Cost Savings

The benefits of cloud computing are achieved mainly due to the Virtualization Technology that triggers all types of clouds. Most of the cores of the servers remain unused or underused, and virtualization technology allows the private cloud users to receive enhanced resource utilization. With enhanced space, the cloud provides space and scale as your business demand grows and adjusts to changing business needs.

One of the main reasons for using private cloud by SMEs is the flexibility offered through virtualization. It enables multiple operating systems and applications to run on the same physical machine. If the resource requirement of an application changes, then the resources dedicated to a particular virtual server can be adjusted (like it can be either increased or decreased).

The flexibility helps to enhance application performance and positively impacts your business productivity.A private cloud environment saves a lot of your money and keeps your IT investment in the budget when compared to a public environment.

Existing Cloud Service Providers.

If you are confused about the private cloud you want to set up in your data center, then there are other options like opting for the best cloud service providers. Here are some top-notch service providers:

  • Amazon Web Services
  • Server Basket
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • IBM Cloud
  • Rackspace
  • GoDaddy
  • Verizon Cloud
  • VMware
  • Oracle Cloud

If you feel that these service providers might not fit on your budget and you want to opt for customized dedicated servers provider along with dedicated network between the servers, then you can even contact the local vendors such as Server Basket with whom you can build your in-house private cloud at a very low price. We have found that these local private cloud providers are charging very less amount but providing Grade A quality servers with free installation support.

Benefits of choosing local vendors for building your own private cloud.

  • Data Hosted on Premises
  • Grade “A” Quality Servers
  • Access Any time
  • Fixed Billing
  • No Down Time
  • Better Control and Data Security
  • Free Installation Support

To buy from Existing Providers or Build your Own Private Cloud.

So, if you are buying the cloud services from local providers, you will end up investing very less amount and get the best services with local support.

With four basic tenets, as already revealed above, your business would receive the most benefits from the private cloud:

Converged Infrastructure.

In a private cloud, servers are virtualized using the operating system cores. The private cloud should be properly built and tested with factors such as disaster recovery, placement logic, and replication. It should have the ability to exist across multiple data centers and should be able to support another tenet of cloud computing. While you are opting for the private cloud, you should ensure removing any single point of failure in the service.

Fully Automated Orchestration.

Both the system management and software distribution should have fully automated orchestration across the converged infrastructure. This is where you can save costs and can even reduce the resources. The private cloud allows us to streamline the human activity and automate deployment required to perform the daily tasks. If previously, it took 2-3 days to extract and arrange the data, with a private cloud, you would be able to gain and arrange the data within 15 minutes. With automated orchestration, you would experience speed and agility in various levels of approval.

Self Service computing offering.

With a private cloud, you can easily access the data when needed without depending on your colleagues. No matter where ever you are located, with a strategically build cloud, you don’t need the help of an IT administrator to control the performance of the application.

Accountability.

The IT administrator or the upper departments has the accountability of which department or person is accessing the data. You can keep a complete track of which users or employees are using which resources and for how long.

How can you build an On-Premise Cloud?

Want to build an on-Premise Cloud? Then you just have to either buy a new server with loaded configuration depending on your business requirement. If you have budget issues, then there are retailers who even offer low-cost refurbished servers that are also best for running high-end applications. Although these servers are used servers, they are re-engineered and sold.

Another option you can opt for is the leased servers. Here you rent a server from the service provider for a certain period, maybe for a month or a year, and pay them the agreed lease amount. You just use the server for a certain period and then return it to the service provider as your lease period ends.

There are various types of server brands like Dell, HP, Cisco, IBM, and others that are best for building a private cloud environment. Depending on your business application needs and database storage, the processor configuration, RAM capacity, and storage drives to choose are decided. Depending on the strength of the processor and the number of cores, you can decide on how much virtual machines to use.

Summary.

An SME can even take cloud services from a cost-effective service provider. It depends on the choices and the future business expandability of the company. For a private cloud, you should have a real business case for it. To build a private cloud, you need to be very clear on many aspects, what you want to achieve and how it fits your multi-cloud strategy.

A private cloud, after all, is not a simple engineering project, rather it must be strategically planned and implemented. You should build a private cloud infrastructure that can reduce the latency rate, handle more traffic, and offer exceptional performance during heavy workloads. In order to tackle all these challenges, you must build a private cloud with a reliable and reputed company.

Your Complete Guide To Passing The Verbal Reasoning Test

Verbal reasoning tests assess how you process and respond to written information. Many take the form of a passage of text, followed by questions that determine how well you understood what you’ve read. Typically you answer these questions with a ‘true’, ’false’ or ‘cannot say’ response – although this can vary from test to test. Literacy and verbal logic are two skills that are highly prized by employers, so it pays to be prepared.

That’s why we’ve put together some top tips to help you ace your verbal reasoning test with confidence.

1. Start with the basics.

Before you begin practising mock tests, it’s important to gather as much information about the company you’ll be taking the test for; who are they, what makes them tick, why do you think they want you to take the test? The more you know, the more you’ll build a picture of the type of candidate they’re trying to attract. And as they say, to be forewarned is to be forearmed!

2. Prepare yourself and your space.

There really is no substitute for practice when it comes to verbal reasoning tests. And setting up an environment that works hard for you is one of the best ways you can help yourself get ahead. Try and find a space that’s quiet, well-lit and free from distractions. Make sure you’ve got a glass of water, a pen and paper for any note taking and a timer to help you replicate test conditions. It may seem frivolous, but taking the time to set up a space that’s conducive to success will really help you adopt the right mindset.

3. Ask yourself, what is verbal reasoning?

Getting to grips with what exactly verbal reasoning is, is an important priority. You can find lots of information on verbal reasoning tests, including practice questions and answers at Practice Aptitude Tests.

Essentially you’ll read various passages of text, and answers questions related to what you’ve just read – most of the time with either ‘true’, ‘false’ or ‘cannot say.’ This may sound simple, but a time pressure is applied to give employers a clearer idea of how you respond under pressure. Language and comprehension abilities are highly-valued skills that you’ll need to call upon daily, so it’s worth putting time and effort in to prove you have what it takes.

4. Get practising.

The biggest tip we can give is to do as many mock tests as you can; review each one, work out where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and continue to work on the areas you find challenging. You can practice verbal reasoning tests here, and you’ll also find lots of handy tips and tricks, as well as a dashboard to track your progress.

The question formatting can take a little getting used to. For example, for most verbal reasoning tests you can apply the one minute per question rule, but it’s always good to take a few seconds at the beginning of each test to work out how much time you can allocate each question. This stops you getting caught up on anything tricky, and ensures you give yourself the best possible chance of finishing the test on time.

5. Remember the answer is right there in front of you.

The best thing about the verbal reasoning test is you don’t need any prior knowledge of the subject you’re answering questions on – the answer is in the text. So if you’ve practised the test format and understand how to answer the questions, you’ve set yourself up for success. Because there really is no denying the fact that the answer is right there in front of you!

6. Embrace your competitive side.

It might well be hidden deep, but everyone has a competitive side. Using other people’s scores, (or even your own), as a way of judging how you’re doing can help inspire you to practice harder. Although it’s important to have a little perspective with this approach – when you’re first starting out, you’re bound to find the tests more challenging, and if you find yourself feeling despondent when looking at other people’s scores we recommend just judging yourself by your last performance. You’ll be surprised how quickly you improve if you put the time and effort in.

7. Have confidence.

A healthy dose of confidence on the big day can go a long way. If you’ve followed this guide and put the time and effort in, there is no reason why you shouldn’t ace the test on the big day. So take a deep breath, tell yourself you can do it – and then go out there and do it.

So there you have it, a brief round up of everything you need to know to ace your verbal reasoning test. We know you can do it!

9 Subscription Business Ideas That Will Inspire You

By March of 2019, Amazon Prime membership reached 103 million, indicating that people worldwide are drawn to the convenience of quick and easy online shopping. It was into this world of online shopping carts and single-click purchasing that subscription box businesses were born.

Subscription businesses take decision making out of the equation. Customers simply pick a subscription service based on general interests and allow businesses to curate a selection of related items for them. Between 2014 to 2017, subscription businesses grew their online traffic by 800%.

If you’re looking for a way to profit off of this booming market, you’ll need to start with the “general” before you start curating the perfect products.

Read on for our top nine subscription business ideas that customers will love!

1. Snack Boxes.

If there’s one thing that we all enjoy, it’s snacking. Pick a certain segment of the snack food world and offer customers three to five new snacks per box!

Maybe you want to start a junk food subscription for vegans or an international snack subscription for worldly spirits. Get creative and think of markets that have been overlooked by your competitors.

2. Meal Planning Boxes.

Meal planning boxes are great solutions for people who have a hard time motivating themselves to cook at home. Who might those people be? Perhaps young adults who are new to cooking or people who live alone and can never find recipes designed for a single person.

The ticket here is to design recipes that are quick, easy, and healthy.

3. Health and Beauty Boxes.

There are dozens of different health and beauty boxes on the market already but that doesn’t mean you can’t come up with a fresh take on an old concept. Think about the specific needs of different demographics.

For example, a health and beauty box for pre-teens might focus on breakout-prone skin while a box for older men and women would focus more on wrinkles and other signs of aging.

4. Book Boxes.

Book boxes make perfect gifts for avid readers who are always seeking something new. Start with a genre or theme and start researching great titles that fit the bill.

You have thousands of options. There’s always a market for customers who are looking for the newest best sellers but, then again, you can also draw from the market who seeks out the rare or obscure!

5. Accessory Boxes.

Socks! Hair accessories! Jewelry! Bow ties!

Accessory boxes are limitless and you can purchase the products to stock them in bulk at a low price. Statement pieces and funky fashion are very “in” right now and receiving surprise accessories with whimsical patterns and bold colors will surely delight your customers.

6. Fairtrade Boxes.

Ethical shopping is growing increasingly important to consumers worldwide. Fairtrade subscription boxes give customers the opportunity to receive unique items like clothing, accessories, and home decor that are sourced ethically. Donating part of your profit to an international charity is a great way to give your customers an avenue to do some good!

7. Pet Boxes.

There are hundreds of thousands of pet owners in America that love to spoil their furry (or feathery or even scaly) friends. Plenty of subscription boxes catered specifically to dog owners exist, but what about families who own other pets?

One way to create a unique pet box that would satisfy a wide market is to offer boxes that are customizable to different animals. Dogs aren’t the only ones who like a new toy and a tasty treat! Cats, birds, rodents, and lizards are all up for grabs in the pet subscription box market. You could even offer a service that allows pet owners to select products for more than one species and pull in customers who have a whole zoo at home!

8. Baby Care Boxes.

It can be difficult for parents to stay on top of their baby’s changing needs. What they can eat will change rapidly in the first year or two, plus they’re constantly outgrowing their clothes. Create a subscription business that allows parents to sign up when their baby is still an infant that will grow with them as their baby grows!

9. Niche Hobby Boxes.

Niche hobbies may involve smaller markets but chances are, your customers will be die-hard fans of your products. Think of knitters, gamers, model-builders, and other fun hobbies that have a devoted community of makers or players.

There are a few ways to approach a niche hobby subscription box. You can send your customers actual products that contribute to their hobby (i.e. yarn and knitting patterns) or swag that lets them show off their love of their niche hobby (i.e. pins and t-shirts). Alternatively, you can do a combination of both!

How to Profit Off of Your Subscription Business Ideas.

Once you have your subscription business idea, the question is, how do you get it up and running? Of course, you need to find a way to build your stock of products and set a price that will turn a profit but still attract customers. Next, you’ll need to build a website and establish your brand across social media platforms.

If you’re not sure how to brand your subscription box, look to the pros who have already gotten thousands of subscribers. Take note of the hashtags they use, the way they photograph their products, and the way they cater to different styles of content to different social media platforms. This can give you a good indication of where to find your market and how to capture their attention.

Finally, select a subscription billing service. You need to use a platform that is quick and simple and that makes recurring payments easy! Online shoppers love convenience and requiring customers to re-enter payment information each month is a surefire way to lose customers.

Follow Your Entrepreneurial Spirit.

The best subscription business ideas are the ones you actually execute. Find a market that needs filling, preferably one that you already understand, and get cracking!

How To Help Your Employees Really See 20/20 Next Year

by Alastair Lockwood, eye health specialist and ophthalmologist at Feel Good Contacts

We already know that the overuse of computers and smartphones can cause significant strain to our eyes, but with changes to work and daily life meaning we are now more reliant on screens than ever before (such as the one you’re looking at right now), it’s integral you take precautions to protect yourself and your employees once you have put your smart device away.

For those who work in roles that are heavily office-based, taking care of your eyes is even more important to combat the hours spent on your phone, computer screen or console. Optometrists are finding an increasing number of tech-related eye strains in patients, demonstrating the threat devices pose to our long term eye health.

To maximise your health and maintain your vision as close to 20/20 in the upcoming year, we have compiled tips, nutritional advice and strategies that employers and staff can use to help to really see better in 2020.

Encourage regular breaks from your computer screen.

Using a computer too frequently can cause computer vision syndrome (CVS), where the eyes become tired, dry and even strained from the glare. To prevent this, employees are advised to blink regularly during the day when working on a computer to avoid dry eyes.

Taking regular breaks is imperative when sitting in front of a screen, where the famous 20-20-20 rule can come in handy.  Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break from your screen to look at something 20 feet away. This vital break will give your eyes a chance to rest and is an effective way to reduce eye strain.

Adjust your technical environment.

Having a high-quality resolution and adequately bright screen can significantly ease the pressure on your eyes to focus on the computer. Working with a dull screen or glare forces eyes to strain more, making it important to regularly check the screen brightness and resolutions of your equipment.

Employees should request anti-glare screens from their employer, reducing the everyday strain on their eyes. Sufficient lighting is required around desks for equal brightness since shadows and light glare can cause eye fatigue. Computer screens should rest at least 25 inches away.

A clean environment with minimal dust is important will cause less irritation. Artificial tears can help supplement your natural tear film.

Reduce smoking intake.

Smoking exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress and has been linked to the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes and dry eye syndrome. Quitting smoking at any stage of life can be beneficial, reducing the risk of developing eye threatening conditions.

Go on 20-minute walks, four times a week.

Exercising regularly is a recommended way to keep your eyes in check. Exercising will lower the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), helping to protect retinal ganglion cells. It may help in glaucoma patients, but autoregulation, ie independent of exercise is the main control here for blood flow.

Try to sleep for 7-9 hours a day.

For most people, sleeping is the one period during the day when their eyes are not required to focus. During sleep, the eyes are rehydrated with a supply of natural tears, a process which requires a minimum of 5 hours to replenish.

If sleeping is an issue, taking the above steps of exercising regularly are helpful tips to tackle this. Relaxing in bed without using a screen can also help, as well as hot baths, light yoga or reading a book. If your sleep issue persists, visit a doctor to assess if there are any underlying issues to your sleeping patterns.

Eat a balanced diet.

To maintain healthy eyes, eating foods rich in vitamins c and e, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein and zinc are highly recommended. Kale, spinach, salmon, tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, oranges and oysters are some of the many foods crucial to this balanced diet.

Change your eye makeup regularly.

With the eye-watering prices of high-end makeup, it is not uncommon for consumers to continue using their eye makeup until it completely runs out. Liquid and cream eye makeups do, however, collect bacteria which can harbour in brushes, lids or the product itself. Eye makeup and mascara should be replaced every 3 months to minimise the risk of infections and products should never be shared with others.

Wear sunglasses with the correct protection.

Although sunglasses make an excellent accessory in the summer, their importance for eye protection should not be underestimated. Fast fashion retailers do not always produce sunglasses with the correct materials to avoid harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. This makes it imperative for consumers to ensure they purchase glasses which cover both UVA and UVB protection.

Get your eyes checked regularly.

Regular eye examinations are crucial to spotting sight loss or damage before it worsens. Optometrists can help detect conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration which can lead to sight loss, so visiting your optician is an important step in maintaining good eye health.

The roundup.

To tackle the increasing use of screens in our daily lives, try out these eye health tips to keep your vision as close to 20/20 as you can. Perhaps thought of eating salmon every day and cutting out coffee might not be your ideal news, so trying a balanced approach with work, exercise and food habits may be just the trick to improve your eyesight for the year ahead.

Alastair Lockwood is an eye health specialist and ophthalmologist at Feel Good Contacts and surgeon who is passionate about trying to stop people going blind from glaucoma – a leading cause of irreversible blindness. His research specialises into how to treat those patients who are unresponsive to conventional treatment, and is in the stages of developing new models for surgery to cure glaucoma.

How To Trademark Your Logo Design

Finding the perfect logo design for your business can be a big task all by itself. Once you finally find a logo designer or use a logo maker and finish up your logo, it’s time to consider doing a trademark on your logo. Probably only 90% of people that have a logo design actually trademark the design. It’s not completely necessary to have a trademark to protect your design. If you can prove your design was designed and paid for by you, this can sometimes be enough to protect your design. If you are worried about someone stealing your logo and you are unsure if you should trademark it, then just trademark the logo and set your mind at ease.

Pursuing your own business can bring about a whole range of feelings, from excitement to tedium. However, one of the more exciting activities to engage in is the design of the company’s logo. Your logo will give off the first impression of your company, over and over, as it is displayed for all to see. That could mean adverts, websites, business cards, billboards, and even commercials. While you want your logo to represent you in the best ways possible, you also have to make sure that you are representing your logo correctly. In order to do this, you need to trademark your logo and we’re going to tell you how to go about it. From large businesses to smaller businesses, there is a way for everyone – depending on how thoroughly you want to personally own your logo.

First and foremost, you’re going to want to roll up your sleeves and do your homework! You are going to have to ensure that no one has used, or is using your logo. You want to make sure that your logo is as genuine and as unique as possible so that it doesn’t replicate or resemble another logo that could already be trademarked.  The United States Patent and Trademark Office offers a coding system for design elements but due to the high number of design elements and combinations, it has reportedly been complicated to use this method. When in the beginning phases of trademarking, it is often best that you search for similar logos and/or text graphics in similar businesses first, and expand your search from there. Once you have designed your logo and verified that it is genuine to your company, you are ready to consider trademarking it.

There are a few different ways to trademark your logo, although the less effort put forth, the less secure your logo will be as far as ownership is concerned. Let’s start small and then we’ll move onto the big one – small, in this case, means localized. That being said, if your company is strictly local, you can simply register your logo with the current Secretary of State serving the state your business is located in. By doing so, however, your logo will only be trademarked in that specific state and will be available to use  freely elsewhere. Essentially, this means that if your business logo was trademarked in Florida and someone from Ohio started using that same logo, you would not be able to legally challenge them for the theft or plagiarism of your creative design.

For those larger businesses that want to keep their logos secure and able to be used nationwide, you are going to want to apply to trademark your logo with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Most consider this the most expensive, time-consuming route because it is extremely important to utilize a trademark specialist or lawyer in order to ensure all information is thoroughly accurate. The application process can prove to be rigorous and overwhelming with the biggest feat being to describe the logo and all of its components accurately. These can range from color, position of graphics, fonts, and even details on where and how you intend to use your logo . By using an experienced professional, you will be more likely to cover all of your bases on the application itself and raise your chances significantly of completing the process successfully. The biggest downfall to this process, is the time it takes for an official answer to be given. Some have suggested it could take six to eight months – perhaps even more depending on how large their current workload is.

Once you have cleared the application process and have secured your logo, you are going to want to monitor its usage. Not only do you want to keep a clear track of how and where your logo is being used by your own company, you will also want to monitor other businesses to ensure your logo hasn’t been taken. Luckily, there are lawyers and professionals that do just that. They will accurately and thoroughly keep track of your logo and inform you if it has been found being used by an unauthorized person or business. This is the best way to guarantee your logo is not being exploited or used inappropriately.

Of course there is one last, inexpensive option, albeit not very attractive. You could simply just use your logo and hope for the best, but this is not a legal trademark by any means and if someone else trademarked it – you would have to begin anew. The best and most sound advice to retain all rights to your logo is to go through the process of legally trademarking it. For official information, you can visit https://www.uspto.gov/ and choose where to begin making your logo official.
