Understand the Different Elements of Functional Testing

Business concept with copy space. Office desk table with pen focus and analysis chart, computer, notebook, cup of coffee on desk.Vintage tone Retro filter, selective focus.

When you turn to a testing service, you have a lot to think about on the matter. One of the main factors to think about is the type of testing service you’re looking for. Without knowing that, you will be stuck in an endless loop of confusion.

Figuring out whether or not it works the way it’s supposed to is quite challenging. In a situation like this, you want to be able to turn to functional testing or functional testing services. This is basically the specific work that is needed in order to validate that software works as it’s supposed to. By the end of the functional testing process, vital decisions can be made. If things need to be fixed or added, it will be done, and the process starts over once again. All cases of defects are going to be taken care of to make sure everything works properly.

Although, if everything is okay, then the software is then sent to production. A note to keep in mind is that this is a form of black-box testing. Therefore, technicians may not have all the knowledge needed for certain internal systems. That’s why the main focus of this testing process is system validation. Companies can gain a much more competitive edge by getting the help of a functional testing service. It’s a method that involves multiple types of tests with every test having a specific function behind it.

Ideally, there isn’t just one single method that can fully rest a single system. For proper testing, multiple methods are going to have to be used in every cycle. There may be times where one method may be repeated in more than one occasion. Needless to say, there is more than one type of functional testing to know about.

There Is Unit Testing.

A specific functional testing service that mainly focuses on evaluating code is known as Unit Testing. It’s where the code is looked over in order to figure out if everything is functioning properly. During this test, small pieces of code can be isolated and evaluated on different occasions. The plus side about this kind of test is that the risk of code coupling is significantly reduced. This is possible because single codes are being isolated for evaluation. A good unit test is going to be reliable, which means things should be done correctly instead of a failure.

An Integrated Test.

In terms of tasks, unit testing typically focuses on the key components of isolation. With integrated testing, things work a little bit differently. Integrated testing evaluates cases of validation by grouping components together. Every test that will be integrated will have a group of components behind it.

There are multiple types of functional testing that have to be understood. Overall, the real challenge is to find a service with the capable tools of getting any form of testing done. If you can find the right service early on, you will be able to get all of the proper testing help that you are looking to have.

Everything You Need To Know About Virtual Data Rooms

A VDR is an online database in which businesses can share and store confidential information, usually used during a financial transaction. Virtual data rooms may also be described as a type of document filing system or electronic repository. With the ubiquitous reliance on PCs and specialized software to keep a business running smoothly, and coupled with the fact that more enterprises are making the transition of being paperless, many of the previously document-heavy operational practices have been shifted to the virtual realm.

Virtual data rooms are used by companies to securely share and store critical and sensitive corporate data and most commonly used during deals. The information stored in data rooms is often private documentation considered to be of high value to the business or owner of the data room. In addition to the traditional record-keeping, that is required for many legal, financial, and tax matters, a lot of businesses have many other important files, documents, and information they need to retain and would like to store safely and securely to ensure that it remains confidential. For instance, items relating to intellectual property, such as copyrighted works and trade secrets, must be convenient to access but stored in a highly secure location. Because of the growing importance of data and the ensuing increased demand to ensure such data is adequately safeguarded, the VDR was born, and over the years, it has evolved into the kind of solution it is today.

Benefits of Using a Virtual Data Room.

For financial transactions, VDR software has become the norm, replacing the physical data rooms. Physical data rooms had lots of limitations and were inconvenient and time consuming for the parties involved. Thanks to the latest advancements of online security, however, the physical data room became an outdated concept and is being replaced with a virtual data room, where businesses can share information safely, securely, instantly, and from anywhere in the world. Below, you can find the most common uses of VDRs.

Fundraising.

For startups and larger enterprises, engaging in fundraising rounds is often key to growing a company. Entrepreneurs know that convincing investors to part with their cash isn’t exactly an easy feat. Fundraising mandates, many documents, and data sharing are really important, especially during the initial steps. During these phases, using VDRs can drastically expedite the requisite exchange of important information, and leadership teams on both sides of the deal should feel comfortable given that using virtual data rooms will allow for better oversight and control.

M&A.

Merging with or acquiring other companies involves research, looking at detailed reviews, and reading through volumes of documents. For businesses merely entertaining a purchase offer, it can be daunting to hand over the important and sensitive data that will be requested. Thus, businesses engaged in M&A can still participate in negotiations and allow for the safe viewing of confidential, valuable data, by relying on a purpose-built VDR. And, if a deal doesn’t close, access to the data room can easily be terminated.

Strategic Partnerships.

Even if businesses don’t formally merge or acquire another company, it makes sense to partner with other enterprises for the provision of some service, goods, or to engage in an entirely new venture. These arrangements, no doubt, require a substantial amount of document and data sharing. Once again, this is a situation in which data rooms will prove invaluable, as they will greatly ease the minds of the leaders involved because they can rest assured knowing that all the valuable data will be well-protected.

IP Management.

There are cases when businesses may not be as concerned about sharing valuable data with external parties, but still need a coherent data sescurity strategy, this is particularly true for new companies and other enterprises whose survival and growth are dependent on safeguarding invaluable intellectual property (IP). For businesses falling under this umbrella, establishing a data room to store all IP-related documentation is a wise decision, especially when security standards are imperative.

Other uses of VDRs include audits, board communications, secure document sharing, and more! Today, it is easier than ever to invest in and set up a secure data storage solution, with the modern VDR being the service of choice, data rooms offer lots of benefits including the practical features and tools that companies want, and will use, and they have a user-friendly, intuitive interface.

Accepting A Non-Dilutive Government Grant? 5 Surprising Mistakes To Avoid

Non-dilutive grants are a great way to fund your research, provided you’re working on a project that directly benefits the government according to current needs. Many companies pursue non-dilutive government grants because they don’t require giving away ownership in the company.

According to Upcounsel, typical non-dilutive grants include research grants, translational grants, and SBIR/STTR program contracts. The largest grants are about $150,000 for a phase I award and can reach $1 million for a Phase II award.

Are you pursuing a non-dilutive government grant or contract? If so, you’re pursuing funds from a reliable source. However, be aware of the following mistakes that could cost you the contract:

1. Not meeting contract deliverables.

As the recipient of a grant, you’re required to meet certain deliverables. Not meeting your deliverables can result in a canceled contract. For example, eCivis describes three scenarios where grant recipients’ contracts were canceled. The first grant was revoked because the recipients of school supplies did not meet the requirements set forth in the grant terms. The second recipient was required to show proof of a 20-year lease, but only had 13 years left. The third grant was canceled when staff failed to close ten or more cases per month per contract deliverables.

Before accepting a contract, make sure you’re able and willing to meet all of your deliverables. Grant money is not free money – it’s conditional. The government isn’t lenient when it comes to enforcing contracts, so make sure you can meet all requirements before agreeing to the terms.

2. Erasing rather than crossing out, rewriting, and initialing changes.

It sounds trivial, but all timesheet changes must be crossed out and initialed rather than being erased. You’re also required to have basic written procedures that state specific timesheet rules. Government contract CPAs from Jameson & Company explain that written policies must include the following terms:

  • Timesheets must be filled out daily in ink
  • All employees who charge their time directly or indirectly to the government award are required to record all their time
  • Timesheets must be signed by the employee and their supervisor
  • There is no erasing. All changes must be crossed out and initialed

All of the above rules must be clearly outlined in your written policies, no exceptions. Otherwise, if you face an audit, you could be in trouble. Worse, without written policies, your team is unlikely to remember all the rules and might accidentally record time incorrectly.

3. Uncompensated overtime.

Not keeping accurate time records makes it impossible to prove you’ve paid proper overtime to salaried employees and contractors. If you can’t prove you’ve paid proper overtime, how do you know it’s been paid in the first place?

Calculating overtime for salaried employees is more difficult than it is for hourly employees. With salaried employees, it’s easy to miss overtime compensation without accurate accounting records.

For example, say you have an employee making $85,000 per year. Their cost is $40.86 per hour based on an estimated 2,080 working hours in a year. You’ll bill the government at this rate on a weekly basis. This might seem perfectly fine, until the end of the year when you add up all hours worked.

At the end of the year, say that employee worked a total of 2,400 hours. If that employee is exempt from overtime pay, they’ve worked 320 additional hours making their actual cost $35.42 per hour. You’ve already billed the government at a rate of $40.86 per hour. This discrepancy matters and needs to be reflected in your time records.

On the other hand, if that employee is non-exempt, you haven’t properly compensated them for 320 overtime hours worked. A discrepancy is expected, but you will be expected to adjust for owed overtime. The consequences for not doing so can reach tens of thousands of dollars in fines.

4. Not having a supervisor sign employee time sheets.

Your time sheets are a daily task that need to be completed in full, to specific standards according to the Federal Acquisition Regulations. Part of those regulations requires employers to sign all timesheets to denote their approval before handing them off to the accounting department. It’s a simple yet tedious task that must be done without exception.

Compliance isn’t difficult when you follow the rules.

Complying with contract requirements isn’t hard when you have written policies in line with FAR regulations. It may seem tedious at first, but in case of an audit, you’ll be glad you took the time to understand and play by the rules.

How Does Live Chat Work And Why Is It Important?

As we advance further into the digital age, one thing is becoming increasingly clear for businesses looking to expand online: speed is of utmost importance. With the ability to have instant access and overnight shipping for various products, customers are starting to become accustomed to fast and convenient interactions.

One tool that more and more companies have been implementing recently is live chat support. But how does live chat work, and why is it important for businesses to implement it?

What is a Web Chat Process?

You may have experienced web chat support that operates like an instant messaging program in your browser. The customer remains at their computer with a browser window open, working through the issue with a representative. As long as the customer and the representative have nothing better to do than sit at the computer for the next hour, it’s a great system.

But it’s not very indicative of how we live our lives these days.

More and more customers are likely visiting your website from their phones—chances are you have the data to back this up. Even if the webchat function works on their phones, will it keep working when they flip over to their music app, or Netflix, or their email, or messaging apps, or all of the above?

Consider instead the convenience of live chat performed through texting or messaging apps. Now your support or sales staff are communicating in the preferred method of your customer. They don’t need to stay chained to their computer. The conversation can continue — at their pace. On their terms.

Why Is Chat Support Important?

Live chat software is slowly changing the online marketplace, as companies across the globe are finding uses for implementing live chat software. Live chat allows for an alternative to traditional call centers or email support interactions.

What Are The Benefits of Live Web Chat for Businesses?

Here are just a few benefits that live chat support can give your company.

Lower Wait Times.

Traditionally, if customers needed technical help or otherwise need a question answered, they would either have to call in to a call center in order to talk to a representative. The upside to this solution is that the customer can get a personalized interaction.

The downside is that call operators can only handle one call at a time. This can result in longer wait times. According to a 2015 Consumer Reports study, 66% of respondents were annoyed with having to deal with long wait times and 57% were so annoyed that they hung up without a resolution.

Live chat support can potentially circumvent this issue as a live chat box prompt will appear in the browser, making it so the customer has instant access to an operator who can answer their questions in real-time.

Improve Website Experience.

Similarly, live chat software can help improve the overall experience of your website for customers.

The experience that your customer has on your website is of utmost importance. One report found that 57% of customers will abandon their online purchase if they are unable to have their question(s) resolved quickly. Not everyone can be answered in an FAQ, so what’s the quickest, most convenient way to connect your customers with a live representative?

Increase Conversion and Sales.

A good example of a business using live chat to enhance their website is James+James Furniture. Over a quarter of their customers now use live chat features, and, on average, those customers spend 15% more than other clientele. The impact on ROI has been instantaneous and impressive.

Not only are operators able to answer questions in a timely manner, they can also suggest other similar products in real-time that the consumer may also be interested in increasing sales.

When to Use Live Chat.

While there are many benefits to using live chat, it is not perfect nor the best solution for every type of customer interaction.

Live chat is best used in situations such as when:

  • You have one or more dedicated operators who are available during the majority of the day.
  • You are looking to capture otherwise uninterested people who would leave your site
  • You want to follow traffic in real-time to see how your website is being used.
  • You are interested in providing a more personalized and interactive support.

Why Use Live Chat?

If the above reasons weren’t enough, there is another major reason for businesses to consider incorporating live chat software. Live chat support has the highest customer satisfaction rating at 92%, which is much higher than other forms of online support.

There’s No Reason Why You Can’t Make A Fabulous Living From Your Website

As a society, when we think about someone sitting in their home slaving away at a website, our initial thought is something negative along the lines of ‘maybe they should get a real job’ or ‘that’ll never work’. It’s a toxic attitude, but one that is still rife due to it being something fairly new and away from what has always been the norm. The ‘normal’ way of earning a living has always traditionally meant getting up, heading to the office/warehouse/yard, and tiring yourself out all day. Well, it’s 2019, and there are new methods that can pump lots of money into your bank account.

If you’re quite the tech-savvy person (or even if you’re not), and you think that this sort of thing could work for you, then why not give it a go? It could be the ideal job for you. If you have a PC or laptop, then you’ve little to lose. This kind of thing might take a little time to understand, but once it’s all in your noggin, then it’ll stay put. If you have a couple of minutes, perhaps you could continue reading as we talk about why you should try it and how you can make a genuine living out of it.

Many Have Done It Before.

For the majority of people in this world, the thought of stepping into something new is usually followed by negativity. They often never pursue something that could really skyrocket their entire life because of silly reasons. You have to look at those who did something about it, though, and specifically, what kind of person they are. I’ll tell you what kind they are: normal; nothing special. They just gave things a go and never gave up. You can also do that.

Creating Content That People Want Isn’t Too Challenging.

That’s right. The hard part is obviously coming up with a topic (it’s not hard if you have a serious passion for something, obviously!), but once that’s thought of, slotting in pieces of content should be fairly simple. There are millions and millions of internet users; you’re going to resonate with lots of people.

A Little Thing Called Affiliate Marketing.

This little method of money-making is a very popular one – especially with the likes of bloggers. Once you’re all set up, you’ll look for businesses within your niche. If they’re selling something, then you might want to get a piece of that profit! If they have an affiliate scheme, then you can get in on it. Your job would basically be to promote a certain product or service and provide a link to it. If someone clicks the link and buys; you get some sweet commission!

You Can Easily Throw In Some Advertisements.

Things like Google Ads can be a great source of income. You can obviously independently contact companies and ask if they’d like to advertise on your site, but Adwords is a good initial starting point. Google provides adverts on your site that a relevant to it; if someone clicks on the ad, then you get paid. Simple. There are more detailed aspects to this stuff, and with Adwords management shifting to automation, there can be a lot to sink your teeth into in terms of the technical side. If your website has a lot of visitors, then this little scheme could make you a very wealthy human being.

Steps To Improve Your Credit Score

1. Get A Free Credit Report.

Getting your free credit report is the first step to take and will let you know where you stand with your credit score. There are a few ways that you can order your credit report and you need to use the one that best suits you.

In order to make sure that you’re ordering the right, and a safe credit report, you will need to provide your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number. You will also need to prove your identity by providing information that only you will know such as your monthly mortgage payment.

2. Carefully And Thoroughly Review Your Report.

Once you have your credit report, you need to check it very carefully. This step can help boost your score. Lenders, banks and credit companies can make mistakes and you need to be on the lookout for these mistakes.

If you see any accounts on your report that you do not recognize or if some of the dates do not match up, you need to contact the company in question for more details. You should also pay attention to late payments and penalties that you do not recognize and get more information. It is best to call the company to find out more than to leave a mistake on your credit report. The call you make could end up with this item being removed from your report and this will boost your score.

3. Pay Your Bills On Time.

If you have a credit score that is on the low side, you will have time to fix this and you need to take advantage of that. If you have a clear history of late payments, you need to start turning this trend around. To do this, you need to ensure that you pay all of your bills on time.

To help with this, you should opt for online payments. You can also make a note in your calendar and keep track of your bank account and spending. Any monthly bills that you have need to be paid on time and when you do this for several months, you will see an improvement in your credit score.

4. Focus On Credit Card Bills.

The interest you pay on your credit card will be the highest interest people face for any short term loans or credit. This is why you need to get your credit card payments down as soon as possible. While paying your bills on time is important, you should also keep your credit balances as low as possible. Focus on paying off high-interest cards first and only use it when you absolutely have to.

There are steps you should take with your credit card to improve your credit score. Lowering your debt and making payments faster are some of the best methods to use to boost your score.

5. Avoid New Credit Accounts.

Lenders and creditors do not like people who open new credit accounts. This is a sign that you are taking on more debt and you could have problems paying all of this off. To lower the chances of this red flag, you need to avoid opening new active credit and loan accounts. Doing this will also improve your credit score.

6. Keep Late Payments To 30 Days.

There are times when you will not be able to pay all of your debts on time. If you are in one of these unavoidable situations, you will need to keep your late payment to 30 days. This is important as many creditors and lenders do not report any 30-day late payments to the credit reporting agencies. However, these companies will report any payment that is 60 days late.

Have A Credit Score Objective.

After checking your credit report, you should set a credit score goal and aim to meet this. If you have a score of 620, you are on the line between bad credit and decent credit. In these situations, you should aim for a score of 670 within 100 days. You can do this by paying down your debt, avoiding any new debt and reviewing all of the items on your credit report regularly.

Avoid High Credit Card Balances.

A lot of people overspend and will see their credit card balances rise. The problem with this is that credit card reporting companies penalize people with high balances. Ideally, you should keep your balance to around 30% of your available credit. This means that if you have $3,000 of available credit, you should have a maximum balance of $1,000. There are a few ways that you can maintain this and paying down your credit card debt is a good option.

How Diversity Can Increase Innovation And Growth In Your Business

by Zeynep Ilgaz, Chief Executive Officer of Confirm BioSciences

It’s no secret that many industries like tech and biopharma have struggled with diversity. In the annual 2017 Fortune 500 listing, including ten ranked biopharmaceutical companies, not one was led by a female CEO or had a female Chairman of the Board.

These companies aren’t just creating a gender gap – they are missing an opportunity to increase innovation and drive business growth by neglecting to deploy greater diversity throughout their organizations.

As CEO of Confirm BioSciences, creating diversity at all levels of the company has been a primary goal. With an almost 50 percent split between male (57%) and female (43%) employees, a diversity of ages of employees, with 30 percent identifying as Asian, 30 percent Hispanic/Latino, 13 percent Caucasian, and 27 percent Other, every aspect of our company’s make-up is diverse.

In our organization, diversity is a key ingredient for better decision-making among teams. We never discriminate in our hiring decisions and we make a concerted effort to bring unique individuals with varied backgrounds and perspectives into the fold. We foster a collaborative work environment where everyone is encouraged to bring ideas to the table and help lead the direction of the company.

Perhaps some of my focus on diversity comes from my own background. I came to the United States in 1998 as a Turkish immigrant with my husband Serhat Pala. We arrived with nothing but two suitcases, a love for each other, and a shared passion for entrepreneurship. My different cultural experiences than many others in the United States as well as being a woman have given me a distinct worldview from many other entrepreneurs.

When my husband and I first conceived the idea for Confirm BioSciences while working jointly on our final MBA project at San Diego State University, we saw an opportunity to create an at-home medical testing company in a growing market. However, we also recognized an opportunity to build a company with a unique mission to provide quality diagnostic testing and health and wellness solutions while keeping to our personal values of putting people first.

In 2008, we founded Confirm BioSciences and I became CEO. Diversity was a key part to both aspects of the company’s mission – growing its business and focusing on the people who work for the company.

Since its inception, Confirm BioSciences has taken corporate social responsibility very seriously, with five percent of our profits donated to homeless shelters each year. Giving back and volunteerism are central components of our company’s pillars, which bring us all together around an important common cause.

Still, as a growth-oriented company, we do care about driving value for investors. Interestingly, research has consistently shown that ethnic and cultural diversity among executive leadership, which Confirm BioSciences has, correlates with statistically significant higher company success.

In Confirm BioSciences’ case, we have absolutely proved this research to be true. Since the company’s founding, we’ve seen 2,000 percent revenue growth with 30 percent year-over-year growth. We’ve created 51 jobs to date with plans to hire for more than 50 additional positions over the next two years. And, we have become a leader in personal and professional health testing through innovative medical diagnostic products.

I believe that embracing diversity and highlighting existing employees at all levels, as well as empowering and promoting future leaders by reinforcing leadership opportunities, has enabled us to achieve these goals. Employees within our company are encouraged to be themselves, speak up during meetings, and maintain confidence as valuable contributors to our team. We engage all team members in driving important decisions and provide opportunities for all to contribute, learn and advance in their career.

Fostering diversity, team collaboration and an overall company culture that focuses on “people over profit,” has also landed Confirm BioSciences on Inc. magazine’s coveted “Best Workplaces” list for two years in a row.  We stand out from thousands of companies as one of the best places to work because of these types of commitments to personal and professional growth, diversity and efforts to empower and inspire our team on all levels.

Most importantly though, having diversity in personnel, whether through differences in our team members’ ages, ethnicities, cultures, genders, areas of expertise, or levels of experience, helps facilitate diversity in innovation. And, as we all know, innovation is the true driver of business growth.

Zeynep Ilgaz is nothing short of a serial entrepreneur. Since emigrating from Turkey to San Diego with her husband and business partner Serhat Pala, Zeynep has amassed great success. In 2008, she established Confirm BioSciences, a global leader in quality diagnostic health & wellness testing solutions. As the Chief Executive Officer of Confirm BioSciences, she pioneers the development of proprietary labels for widescale retail and corporate distribution. Scaling her multi-channel infrastructure is Zeynep’s primary focus.
